Lot 512, Section 62, Ang Cheng Ho Road, 93100 Kuching.

Nowadays, you can’t really find this kind of place which has freshly baked Chinese Pastry, coming straight out of the oven in the shop and being sold straight away. This place was strongly introduced by 3 pensioner uncles, whom are the cafe’s fans. I was asked to follow them to one of their afternoon tea at a place where normally youngsters would not go. That’s how I found this jewel.

From the outside it really looks like an ordinary kopi tiam (coffee shop). But it does as said, sells very delicious Chinese pastry, freshly baked everyday.

The outlook of the shop

It’s specialties are “Spiral Pastry” & “Char Siew Pau” and of course many more others, but the most famous one are these ones.

Spiral Pastry

RM1.00 each
Inside is White bean paste & meat floss

Char Siew Pau

RM1.40 each

If you are not into Chinese pastry? No worries, they also have normal buns found in all other bakeries.

The owner of the shop is a Muslim Indian commonly known as Hassan by regular customers and friends.

Be it a weekend or a weekday, the place is always 80% full, unless when they run out of their ingredients. The operating hours is normally around 6am till late morning or sometimes before noon. Make sure you go early as normally sell out by late morning.

On weekdays, the place will be packed by mostly government officials taking their break at the shop and having brunch at the same time. The Rojak and Rojak Mee are dishes adored by not only Indians, but also by Malays and even Chinese.

Indian Rojak cake – This is the most important ingredient, which created the dish the Indian Rojak, it is a type of fried cake stuffed with long beans and other vegetables.

When we arrived at about 8.15am, the crowd was just building up. By 8.45pm all the tables in front of the shop were fully occupied and there were a few groups of people waiting for tables too.

Basically this is what is left of the old culture or view of Kuching City, taken over by the kopitiam and cafes mushroomed all over the whole city.

The place is situated at the 5 foot way of a row of shops somewhere near to 100% Discount Store of Ang Cheng Ho Road.
This uncle has been selling his chicken rice, pork rice and mix rice since a very long time ago.

This is what his “shop” looks like, just a little wooden table with a few pots and buckets. There are no tables and chairs, if you would like to eat there you will have to stand there or you can sit at the stair case near to the store. But normally take aways (ta pao) Open from 11am daily, and end his business at about 1pm as normally all the food had been sold off by then.

See how many people has queued for their packed chicken rice? There was about a total of 12 packets ordered to go when I left with mine.

This is the famous mix rice, which contains white steam chicken, braised pork(lo bak), home made chilly sauce and a drizzle of pork(lo bak) sauce which cost RM4.00. Taste nice.

We are at Song Kheng Hai Hawker Centre again, but this time we are talking about Kong Pia, a Hock Chew Delicacy, made of flour and sesame seeds. At this store, the owner served the Kong Pia, fried and stuffed with minced pork, very nice and juicy. One Kong Pia only cost RM0.70, 2 will be enough for a light snack or even a light meal.
Other than Kong Pia, the owner also makes Rojak, another local delicacy prepared with cucumber, radish, pineapple and other fruits, mixed with what the local called “prawn paste. The Rojaks are priced at RM2.00 (normal) or RM3.00 (with cuttlefish). The store opens from about 10 am to 7 or 8pm, also depending on the availability of the ingredients.

If translated to English, it is “5 tastes soup”. It is a sweet local dessert, which can be taken lukewarm or icy cold. Normally in this colorful dessert you will find more than 5 different ingredients, such as Jelly, red dates, lily seeds, dried persimmons, barley, white fungus, orange peel and many more. If you don’t eat some of the stuff, just ask the owner not to add it, they are happy to do so.
The Shop is located at Song Kheng Hai Hawker Centre, open daily from 11am to 7 or 8pm depending on the owners and also the validity of the ingredients to produce the dessert. It is a very refreshing dessert to have during hot afternoons. Especially on Sundays.
